The new Managing Director recognised the need to galvanise his leadership team to improve accountability, safety, the customer experience , and the organisations performance. Working on a need for a high performing, integrated teams based approach, and with a desire to foster self-managing leadership, MODAL was called into help.
The leadership team began by mapping out a shared vision and aligning on a collective thematic goal. MODAL then worked with the team to build clarity of the plan that was needed to deliver on the vision and goal. Our consultants then spent time helping the lead team develop through:
- Building trust
- Fostering healthy conflict
- A shared sense of accountability
Through a number of team alignment workshops, and individual coaching for key leaders, the group began to develop a ‘one team’ mindset.
Rapid team alignment processes then followed with each of the key functional areas in terms of Operations, Maintenance, Finance and HR. The aim was to have each of these teams:
- Start with an outside-in approach in the development of the team; by understanding the value its key stakeholders needed it to deliver
- Map out their own principles and standards for high performance
- Build psychological safety
- Develop greater “feedback fitness”.
As each of these teams became stronger and more effective, MODAL then began to facilitate alignment sessions between the cross-functional teams to break down silos and enable greater collaboration on the thematic goal.
Along the way there was a key focus on building leaders’ self-awareness and asking them to take on more of the decision making, rather than pushing it upwards. There was also a focus of improved transparency of information across the business. The result has been a high performing leadership team, greater empowerment of leaders as they progress towards integrated departments, that now work more effectively together.
